Young Matildas through to second round with 2-0 win over Lebanon

The Young Matildas are one step closer to qualification for the 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship after they defeated Lebanon 2-0 on Saturday morning (AEDT).

Midfielder Amy Sayer put Kyra Cooney-Cross through on goal to open the scoring in the 27th minute before Sayer herself guaranteed all three points with a strike two minutes into the second half.

While not quite as extravagant as their 18-0 demolition of Mongolia two days previous, the win at the Jounieh Municipal Stadium was an important milestone on the road to next year’s championships.

With six points from six, the Young Matildas are now guaranteed a place in the second round of qualification which takes place in April 2019.

Finish in the top two in their group then and they will qualify for the main tournament in Thailand in October/November 2019.

Coach Gary Van Egmond will be free to experiment with his side when they take on Hong Kong in the final Group A match on Sunday with their opponents already eliminated.
