Aussies Abroad: Kerr's sensational trick lights up Red Stars' win against Dash

An outrageous piece of skill from Sam Kerr lit up Chicago Red Stars’ road win against Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Mexico international forward Katie Johnson scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 triumph after only seven minutes, but Kerr’s magnificent flick and volley in the second half left NWSL fans gobsmacked.

Had the Westfield Matildas captain found the back of the net, there’s little doubt the goal would have been an instant worldwide viral sensation.

But the Red Stars steely defensive efforts ensured a second goal was not necessary in match where Houston led the shot count 9-6 and recorded 54% of possession.

Clare Polkinghorne’s defence restricted Kerr and company to two shots on target but Houston’s attack, which featured Kyah Simon, could not fire Dash back into the game.

The win keeps Chicago in touching distance of the four finals places. They sit just one point away in sixth place while Houston’s third straight defeat means they slip four points back from the Red Stars in seventh.

Courage leapfrog Catley’s Reign in battle at the top

Steph Catley’s Reign FC went down 2-0 against 2018 champions North Carolina Courage in a battle of the NWSL’s top two teams.

Goals from Lynn Williams on 22 minutes and Brazilian star Debinha on 55 minutes did the damage, as Westfield Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams was an unused substitute for the Seattle-based Reign.

The result means Courage surge two points ahead of their title rivals, while Reign cling on to second position as it stands in Round 12.
