The Westfield Matildas have defeated Chile 5-nil at McDonald Jones Stadium on the back of a Caitlin Foord hat-trick.

Foord and Kerr's Westfield Matildas reunion inspires five-star performance

The reawakening of Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr’s strike partnership proved the perfect tonic as the Westfield Matildas bounced back to beat Chile 5-0 on Tuesday night.

The former Sydney FC teammates were in scintillating form in Australia’s big win, in which Foord inspired a remarkable second half blitz.

Foord teed up Kerr for the breakthrough moment in Newcastle before dispatching her first international hat-trick in style - and in doing so, became the first Westfield Matildas player to register a treble since Kerr’s three-goal haul against Japan in the 2017 Tournament of Nations.

“We’ve known each other from such a young age and we’ve played together for a long time,” she told Fox Sports post-match.

“It’s actually been 13 months since we played together so we’re pretty excited to play these games.”

Foord suffered a serious foot injury earlier in the year but her invigorating display at McDonald Jones Stadium was deserved reward for the 24-year-old’s persistence on the road to recovery.

The attacker says she’s buzzing after stealing the show in Newcastle and helping Australia bounce back from Saturday’s defeat in Penrith.

“It’s pretty awesome," she continued.

“I’ve been lacking a bit of confidence in front of goal so to put three away today I’m pretty happy with that.

“I don’t think we played badly in the first game we just couldn’t put it away and they finished their chances and that’s football sometimes.

“Today we didn’t want to do that again and we wanted to win in front of the home crowd and we’re just stoked we got the job done.”
