Heartbreak for several Aussies overseas

Adam Federici will not be joining the Australian ranks in the English Premier League next season, after Reading was bundled out of the Championship play-offs 3-0 on aggregate by Burnley.

Two world class strikes from Martin Paterson and Stephen Thompson soon after half time sealed a 2-0 win for Burnley at the Madejski Stadium in Reading and a date with David Carney-s Sheffield United at Wembley on Monday 25th May.

Federici had to watch from the bench and unless he secures a move to an EPL club, he will remain with Reading in the Championship, where he has had mixed fortunes this season.

There was also heartbreak for Josh Kennedy, as Karlsruhe-s stay in the Bundesliga is all but over, after they let a two-goal lead slip at home against Hannover 96, eventually losing 3-2.

Kennedy started for the fifth straight game and it all looked so promising for Kennedy and his teammates as they went up 2-0 inside the first 35 minutes.

However it was all level by half time, with Hannover scoring twice just before the break and then added a third goal midway through the second half, to leave Karlsruhe still four points adrift of safety with two games remaining. All four teams just above them all play tonight and Karlsruhe-s fate could be all but sealed if one or two of them win.

In Scotland, Celtic moved back to the top of the table by a single point, with a nervy 2-1 win at home against Dundee United.

Scott McDonald played a full game for Celtic and it was his cheeky back heel to Scott Brown that opened up the play and saw George Samaras double Celtic-s lead.

Rangers play Hibernian tonight and a win will see them retake the lead over Celtic.

Meanwhile Scott Chipperfield was again missing from the FC Basel side that won 2-0 at home against Lucerne. Basel remains four points adrift of FC Zurich, who won 5-3 away at FC Vaduz, for whom Mark Rudan played a full game.

There is three games left with Basel and Zurich facing off this weekend, in what will be Basel's last chance to reclaim the Swiss Championship.
