Matildas At Home: Sydney derby ends in stalemate, Canberra's comeback kids

A dramatic comeback, a five star showing, and some gritty performances headlined another big week of A-League Women's action.

Brisbane Roar and Canberra United kickstarted the round with a chaotic 3-3 draw. Although Canberra opened the scoring through former Commonwealth Bank Matilda Michelle Heyman it was Brisbane who would go on to take the game head on. 

Karly Roestbakken's back pass unfortunately found the back of the net while Shea Connors' tap in and Anna Margraf's strike following a Katrina Gorry corner, but the Roar in a commanding position.

In the final five minutes, Grace Maher ensured Canberra would leave with a point scoring a stunning free kick of her own and setting up Holly Caspers for the equaliser. Jamilla Rankin played a full match. 

Emma Checker's Melbourne City took the bragging rights in the Melbourne derby with a five star performance. Kiwi international Hannah Wilkinson scored all five of City's goals while Maja Markovski scored the lone Victory goal. 

Melbourne Victory's Commonwealth Bank Matildas trio - Kyra Cooney-CrossCourtney Nevin, and Alex Chidiac - will be looking to bounce back against Brisbane Roar next week. 


The Sydney derby ended in a stalemate with neither Sydney FC nor Western Sydney able to score. Bryleeh Henry came close for the Wanderers but was denied by Jada Whyman.

With no Remy Siemsen in the line up, Mackenzie Hawkesby created chance after chance but her shooting boots were off target. Jess Nash entered the fray at the 56th minute mark. 

Finally, the Newcastle Jets recorded another win over Wellington Phoenix. Emily van Egmond played the full 90 in the centre of the park while Jemma House scored the only goal of the game.
